Relationships: Appropriate and Professional - Joe Pece

Joe Pece
Joe Pece has been a teacher for over 17 years. He is currently a Staff Officer at the OECTA Provincial Office in the Counselling and Member Services Department. Prior to this, he advocated on behalf of teachers as the Halton Secondary OECTA Unit President. He has had many experiences helping teachers deal with difficult circumstances surrounding their relationships with students, parents, colleagues and administrators and looks forward to providing beginning teachers with knowledge and advice that will help them foster positive professional relationships.

According to the Ontario College of Teachers, one of the most frequent complaints received from members of the public against beginning teachers concerns boundary issues. You may never have heard this term before, but a clear understanding of appropriate boundaries in your daily interactions will be essential for you, not just in your beginning years, but throughout your teaching career. What constitutes the boundary between teachers and students, in particular? Is it ok to send your students emails? Is touch of any kind permissible? What if your students invite you to join them at a social event? This workshop will provide teachers with advice regarding the maintenance of positive and professional relationships with students, as well as with colleagues, parents and administrators. It will focus on boundary issues and ethics faced by teachers on a daily basis. Be sure to access the informative keynote presentation by Joe Pece on this important topic.
