Living the life of a teacher is what I have always wanted to do. I have been teaching for 22 years around the province of Ontario. My first five years have been on Native Reserves in the north and central part of Ontario for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Having the rich experience of teaching native children, I have learned and appreciated the diversity amongst all students. My background is a major in physical education and health with a minor in social sciences. I have my specialist in Religious Education and Part 2 of Special Education. Currently I am working on my Masters in curriculum education. I have taught in all divisions, blended grades, and have been a special education resource teacher. In addition I have become Course Director of the AQ Religion course for Part 1, 2 and 3 as well as be an instructor for a strand in the course. There is so much to learn.

For the last few years I have been an elementary curriculum consultant working with K-8 teachers on all curriculum and classroom matters across the curriculum. My responsibilities have been to provide support for teachers in all areas of the curriculum, planning, assessment and classroom management issues. I have done a number of workshops at the Board, community and school level. I enjoy doing demonstrations in classrooms working with teachers and students to model teaching strategies or observe teachers in action. My focus has been on literacy and most recently, mathematics. I have had many opportunities to be aware of the most current practices and up-date research on effective strategies to be used in the classroom.

One of the areas that I have a strong interest in and continue to refine in my work is building community with others. It is important for me to know my audience, students or fellow teachers or administrators. I want to be able to provide for them in any way that I can. Classroom planning and management is an area that requires a great deal of attention for new and experienced teachers. In the last five years, I have done workshops around classroom planning and management because I think they go hand in hand.

Having met a number of teachers over the course of a few years, I am learning more and more about the diversity of needs in our schools. It is important that we dialogue with each other to give encouragement to find ways to support what goes on in the classroom. It is my hope that you find one or two ideas that may support you in your journey with your students. All the best on the road to discovering who you have in front of you and how you can help them be the best they can be.
